Ride For A Reason is a two day bicycle ride, in support of Southern Alberta Bible Camp.  The goal this year is to raise $100,000. The funds raised will go towards sending kids to camp through the All Aboard fund. The ride will begin in Banff, AB with a stop in Cochrane before ending in Aldersyde, AB, a total distance of 214kms. Riders will be accompanied by support vehicles including trucks, motorcycles and cars and there will be qualified first aid personnel along on the trip.

Friday June 2nd: Meet in Lethbridge/Aldersyde

Arrive at Lethbridge Evangelical Free Church at 4:15pm to sign in, get your swag, and load up the bus.
Carefree Express bus leaves for Banff at 5:00pm. If you are late you may need to find your own transportation. If you would like to meet at our pick up location in Aldersyde please email abbey@sabc.ca or call 403-792-3644.
Bicycles and equipment will be transported either on the bus or in support vehicles.
Lodging in Banff Y Mountain Lodge.

Saturday June 3rd: Banff, AB to Cochrane, AB 100km

  • Breakfast provided in Banff
  • Highway 1 to Canmore and then continuing on the scenic Highway 1A
  • Lunch (included)
  • Supper provided
  • Accommodations in Cochrane, AB
  • Pool/Hot Tub after the ride

Sunday June 4th: Cochrane, AB to Aldersyde, AB 114km

Registration: [Register Now]

Registrations will be processed exclusively online.  Each rider pays a registration fee so that all pledges can go to SABC.

Early Registration Fees

  • 2 day ride = $200
  • 1 day ride = $100

Registration fees will go up by $50 on April 15th, 2017 and the closing date for accepting registrations is May 15th, 2017. After April 15 your registration will no longer include a jersey as the orders will be submitted. Make sure you register before April 15!

The registration fee is not tax deductible.  Once registered, a rider will receive a ‘Ride Package’ by email that includes the Waiver of Liability form to be signed and submitted prior to the ride, Ride Maps, and Sponsorship Forms.  Registered riders will receive a ride jersey and a number of discount privileges (outlined in the ‘Ride Package’ after a rider is registered).

Requirements:

Riders must be a minimum of 16 years of age and able to maintain a speed of 20 km/hr sustained over 100km to participate in the trip.  Participants must be in good health and sign a Waiver of Liability release form prior to joining the ride.  We want to stress that this is a physically and mentally challenging event and you must be in good physical condition to participate. It is also crucial that you are riding a good quality road bike. Past riders have been very disappointed with old, run down bikes and heavy mountain bikes. First time riders have also encouraged us to stress how physically challenging the ride is. Be warned! This will be a challenge, but it will be worth it!

We have a limited number of bikes we are able to lend to first year riders. Contact us if you are interested. We cannot guarantee a bike to all who ask.
Guidelines we follow when selecting who to lend the bikes out to:

  1. bikes are available to first time participants on RFAR
  2. they are available on a first come first serve basis and subject to proper sizing availability
  3. limit of one bike per immediate family
  4. if a person qualifies and a proper sized bike is available, the person will need to register for the ride when notified of the availability

Pledges / Sponsorship:

Each rider is expected to collect pledges or sponsorship for the ride.

Suggested sponsorship amounts

  • 2 days = $1000 with a required minimum of $600.
  • 1 day = $500 with a required minimum of $300.

Minimum sponsorships will need to be attained prior to the ride. If the minimum is not raised, the remainder will be charged to the riders credit card.

Riders can receive sponsorships online or print and hand out sponsorship forms to potential sponsors after they receive their registration confirmation email.  These forms also provide event information and an invitation to the ‘Ride Finale’.  Sponsors can sponsor online with a credit card, mail cheques to SABC or give cheques/cash to the rider they are sponsoring.

Prizes will be awarded for the highest sponsorship commitment by June 3rd, most number of sponsors, most corporate sponsorships and more. Prizes will be handed out at the finale on June 4th.

‘What To Bring’ Checklist:

Beds and bedding are provided at all accommodations this year, however, you will want to bring a towel for the swimming pool/hot tub in Cochrane.

Please bring two spare tubes and any other specialized equipment that your bike will need in case it needs repair. You will need to bring a reliable road bike. We highly recommend getting it checked by a bike shop to make sure it is in perfect working order – discounts available for RFAR riders. Don’t forget to bring the bike, it would be a long walk! A helmet and a water bottle (or two) will be required also. If you have any special nutrition needs or wish to bring along snacks you are certainly welcome to bring it with you. Many people also bring along spare cash to purchase extra food and drinks along the ride or in the evenings.

Bring anything you will need for personal hygiene, comfort and protection:
towel and shower needs, deodorant (please!), sunscreen and insect repellent, change of clothes for the evenings, goggles or sunglasses, rain gear, riding gloves, warm riding clothes, etc.
Bringing a swimsuit is suggested, as there are swimming and hot tub opportunities on Saturday after the ride.
